COVENTRY - After school let out yesterday, teachers at Blackrock
Elementary School traded in their grade books and pencils for
french fries and Happy Meals.
Last night, 12 Blackrock teachers partook in a fundraiser called
"McTeacher Night," in which the teachers took on the role of
McDonald's employees and served students at the restaurant,
located at 1100 Tiogue Ave.
"The idea came from an employee who works at McDonald's,
Gloria Miller," said Sandra Resendes, a parent from Blackrock
Elementary who handles public relations for the school. "We
thought it would be a different and creative way to raise money
for the school."
The proceeds of the fundraiser will be going to the Blackrock
PTA for use in future school projects, Resendes said.
"As a supervisor, I am grateful to have the ability to do
stuff like this," said Randy Boone, supervisor at the Coventry
McDonald's. "The turnout is what I expected. It's been pretty
busy. The teachers have been very helpful. They pick the job
right up. It's pretty cool that they just get it right away."
The teachers were flipping burgers, taking orders, working
the registers, and cleaning the tables.
"It's been pretty busy. People just keep coming in. I haven't
really had a minute to stop working," said Jayne Bailey, a
fifth-grade teacher at Blackrock. "It is very entertaining and
everyone seemed to have a good time. I haven't heard one
complaint all evening, so I guess we did a good job."
Students said they enjoyed spending the extra time with their
teachers.
"It makes me feel happy to see my teachers out of school,"
said Shayam Gaulien, a first-grader at Blackrock. "It is fun to
get to eat dinner with my teachers."
Other students enjoyed watching their teachers work at the
restaurant.
"My favorite part is having our teachers cleaning up after
our mess," said Ashley Cowen, a fifth-grader at Blackrock.
Although Ronald McDonald couldn't make it to the event, BoBo
the Clown was there painting faces and doing balloon art.
"I had a lot of fun. It is pretty cool to see all my friends
and teachers at McDonald's," said Briana Harrington, a
third-grader at Blackrock.
The school does not yet know how much money it made last
night, but the parking lot was full and all the tables were
taken for the duration of the fundraiser. The Coventry
McDonald's held a similar event for Washington Oak Elementary
School last week and, according to Boone, the school ended up
raising about $450.
"Everyone seemed to have a great time and we had a really
great turnout," said Mary Leyden, a first-grade teacher at
Blackrock. "I can say that I would definitely like to stay a
teacher. The tips haven't been what I expected."
